It all started with a frustration: modern dating apps felt like a high-speed treadmill: fast, exhausting, and often leading nowhere. People are swiping, ghosting, and burning out. Is this really the best way to find meaningful connections?

Like any good relationship, the idea for Tender began with listening. Through conversations, surveys, interviews, and deep dives into research papers about dating app behaviour and psychology, one thing became clear: people don't just need another app. They need a different experience, one that prioritises emotional well-being, intentional discovery, and real human connection.

— THE PROBLEM

Love at First Swipe… or Burnout?

Dating apps today contribute to emotional exhaustion, superficial engagement, and ghosting culture. Many users feel disconnected and overwhelmed by endless choices without meaningful interactions.

People are moving away from dating apps and as a consequence, the number of app downloads has decreased.

The Big Dating Dilemna

Decision Fatigue
Swiping endlessly leads to exhaustion, not romance.

Superficiality
Instant judgments overshadow deeper compatibility.

Ghosting Epidemic
Lack of accountability fuels non-committal interactions.

Dark UX Patterns
Many apps manipulate users with paywalls and artificial scarcity.

— THE RESEARCH

Breaking Up with Bad UX

We knew the problem was endless swiping, exhaustion, and superficiality, but what was the solution? To find out, we:

  • Interviewed 5 participants about their dating app struggles.

  • Surveyed 40+ users to pinpoint frustrations.

  • Analyzed the dark patterns that keep users hooked but unhappy.

  • Studied competitors to see what worked and what didn't.

What We Learned

75% of users reported feeling emotionally drained or burnt out by current dating apps.

65% expressed a desire for more gradual, meaningful interactions.

58% showed interest in features promoting accountability and reducing ghosting.

Users felt manipulated by design patterns such as artificial popularity boosts, time-limited interactions, and hidden costs.
